Overall Food Security Conditions Are Good
KEY MESSAGES
Cereal production from the 2012/2013 cropping season has increased by 130 percent compared to the 2011/2012 season and 86 percent compared to the five-year average. This is due to good rainfall conditions, an increase in the area cultivated this year, and farmers' access to tractors provided by the government.
Local markets are supplied with normal levels of cereals, vegetables, and tubers, and prices are relatively stable or declining.
Harvests in most parts of the country were not significantly affected by this year’s floods, except for Eastern Mayo Kebbi, Western Mayo Kebbi, and Eastern Logone. As floodwaters gradually recede, households affected by the floods are returning to their homes, repairing any flood damage, and are engaging in off-season agricultural and market gardening activities.
Most very poor and poor households are able to meet their essential food and non-food needs, and all areas of the country will face Minimal/None (IPC Phase 1) food insecurity conditions through March 2013.
