Niger: OCHA Niger Flash Update No 1 - Gueskerou - Diffa, 19 June 2015

  • According to Diffa regional authorities, three villages (Lamana, Boulamare and Goumao) in the commune of Gueskérou (about 50 km, east of Diffa town) were attacked simultaneously by insurgents (but no claims of responsibility have been made so far) on the night between 17 and 18 of June.

  • 38 civilians were reported dead in the attacks: 28 (14 men and 14 women) in the village of Lamana, 8 in the village of Goumao and 2 in the village of Boulamare. Three wounded people have been transferred to Diffa Hospital.

  • Insurgents burnt 80 per cent of houses in Lamana, stocks of millet, peppers and five moto pumps in Boulamare and one vehicle and the Imam’s house in Ngoumao.

  • The three villages are composed of 1,050 households’ (Lamana 700 households, Gounoua 200 households and Boulamare 150 households), and their preliminary needs include food, shelters and non-food items.

  • The Government of Niger has provided a financial support of 50,000 CFA (around $US100) per households and 100,000 FCFA (around $US200) to each mourning households. The government has also mobilized 2,100 blankets, 2,100 mosquito nets, 2,100 plastic sheets, 1,400 buckets, 233 boxes of soap and 700 pieces of fabric. Furthermore the government plans to distribute 70 t of millet: Lamane (50 t), Boulamari (10t) and Ngoumao (10t).

  • WFP, with its partner CARE, is participating in an exploratory mission to the affected villages and is, if needed, ready to complement the government’s action with distribution of 15 days emergency food ration and nutritional complements to children 6 to 59 months and pregnant and lactating women. The distribution of household articles donated by UNICEF to the Regional Crisis Committee Management is also being considered.

  • The Governor of Diffa and representatives of other state entities, as well as staff from OCHA and WFP are undertaking an evaluation mission to the villages to further assess the needs.
