Country: Central African Republic, Chad, Nigeria

Key messages

  • As one of the world's least developed countries, Chad continues to face a complex emergency as a result of chronic food insecurity, malnutrition, natural hazards, epidemics and massive displacement of populations.

  • The European Commission's humanitarian aid totals €42.8million in 2015. It addresses urgent needs which arise from the recurrent food and nutrition crises, from disease outbreak such as cholera and from both the protracted refugee situation and the recent influx of refugees and returnees from Nigeria and Central African Republic (CAR).

  • Commission funding contributes significantly to the treatment of acutely malnourished children, assistance to the displaced people and the distribution of in-kind food aid and cash grants to the poorest families during the lean season.

  • Recent conflict in neighbouring CAR has triggered an influx of new arrivals, both refugees and Chadian nationals. This has put an additional strain on already overstretched resources. The Commission has so far allocated €6 million to cover these populations’ immediate needs. The Commission has allocated recently an additional €1.5 million to cover the support to Nigerian refugees fleeing from Boko Haram violence.

  • Increasing insecurity in Nigeria and the attacks by Boko Haram group along the Nigeria/Cameroon/Chad borders has led to a new population displacement of 18 000 refugees, 8 500 returnees and 14 500 IDPs in the Lake Chad region.
