CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC
BANGUI IDP RETURN UNDERWAY
The return and reintegration of IDPs who settled at the Bangui Mpoko site continues. As of 22 May, 1,173 of the 4,319 households residing at the site had been registered. Each returnee household receives US$150, mosquito nets, plastic sheeting, food and dignity kits. Meanwhile, an international conference on CAR humanitarian needs, recovery and resilience building was held in Brussels on 26 May under the auspices of the European Union. Preliminary reports indicate that pledges for humanitarian response are around US$138 million.

CAMEROON
1,000 NIGERIANS ARRIVE IN CAMEROON
Nigerian refugees continue to flee to neighbouring Cameroon. On 22 May, UNHCR reported spontaneous arrivals of new refugees at the Minawao camp in the Far North. Around 1,000 refugees have been registered over the last two weeks. The agency estimates that more than 12,000 Nigerian refugees are living outside the camp, the majority of them are pastoralists in Kousserie, a town on the Chadian border close to the capital N'Djamena.

GHANABIRD FLU DETECTED IN TWO FARMS Bird flu has been detected in two farms, including one in the capital Accra, after tests were conducted on poultry, Ghana’s Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research reported on 27 May. A national technical committee has been activated to lead efforts to stem the outbreak and to trace its source. No human infections have been recorded. Including Ghana, four West African countries have now confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus. The others are Burkina Faso, Niger and Nigeria. As a precautionary measure, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali and Togo have banned the importation of poultry from Burkina Faso.

MALI57,000 FLEE ARMED RAIDS Fighting between armed groups in Gao, Mopti and Timbuktu displaced 57,000 people last month, UNHCR reported on 29 May. The newly-displaced add to more than 43,000 IDPs throughout the country who have not yet returned to their homes since the 2012 crisis. The total number of IDPs in Mali now stands at just over 100,000, mainly in the northern part of the country. Those displaced following the recent fighting are living with host families, in temporary shelters or camping and require urgent need of assistance.

NIGERIA
70 KILLED IN ATTACKS, NEW PRESIDENT TAKES OFFICE
Boko Haram militants continue to launch raids in north-eastern Nigeria despite being pushed back by forces from Nigeria and neighbouring countries. On 29 May, the day new President Muhammadu Buhari took oath of office, media reported that seven civilians were killed in a bomb attack at a wedding in Tashan Alade locality in Borno State, where an insurgents attack had killed at least 37 people a few days earlier. On 30 May, a suicide bomber killed 26 people in a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State capital. Buhari has vowed to crush the insurgents.

EVD GUINEA/SIERRA LEONE
22 NEW CASES REPORTED
Sierra Leone reported 10 new confirmed cases between 27 - 31 May after going for six consecutive days (21 - 26 May) without reporting any infections. The new infections erupted in Western Area Urban and Port Loko districts. In May, the country witnessed two different periods lasting several days during which no Ebola infections were reported. Meanwhile, Guinea reported 12 new cases from 23 - 29 May, two less than the week before.
