(Bamako, 20 May 2015) - The new Humanitarian Coordinator in Mali, Ms. Mbaranga Gasarabwe, has officially taken office. Ms. Gasarabwe was appointed at the helm of Mali’s humanitarian community on 8 May by the United Nations Secretary-General. She succeeds Mr. David Gressly who recently completed his mission in the country.

As part of her Humanitarian Coordinator function, Ms. Gasarabwe will oversee the delivery of effective and coordinated emergency aid to the most vulnerable people by humanitarian organizations in Mali. In particular, she will chair the Humanitarian Country Team which is comprised of the Heads of the main UN agencies and NGOs that implement humanitarian programs in the country.

Ms. Gasarabwe will also combine the functions of Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), United Nations Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to which she was also appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General.

Ms. Gasarabwe brings more than 20 years of experience with the United Nations in development and humanitarian assistance. From 2001 to 2011, she served as Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Benin, Djibouti, Guinea and Mali. She was appointed Assistant Secretary-General in the Department of Safety and Security at UN headquarters in New York in 2011, a position she held until her current appointment of Deputy Special Representative.
