Niger: Niger: violence involving Boko Haram fuels new displacement

Violence involving Boko Haram and consequent security concerns fuel new displacement. The World Food Programme is set to provide highly nutritious food to 2,500 children in need displaced at Nguigmi.

About 25,000 people arrived in the towns of Nguigmi and Bosso in south-east Niger, after having fled their homes on small islands in Lake Chad. Niger authorities urged people living on Lake Chad islands last week to evacuate the islands over security fears following a Boko Haram attack.

Most displaced families are settled outdoors and their most urgent needs include shelter, water, food and nonfood items.

The authorities and humanitarian actors are scaling up their response. WFP trucks are on their way to provide highly nutritious food to about 2500 children under five who arrived at Nguigmi.

Niger hosts over 100,000 Nigerian refugees and returnees. About 50,000 people living in the border areas of Diffa region have also been displaced since the start of the year as cross-border violence intensified in February.

In areas hosting refugees, returness, IDPs and host communities, people are set to face a gruelling lean season as about 200,000 face an acute food insecurity and livelihoods crisis.

WFP has been providing life-saving food assistance and nutrition support to over 60,000 people and is scaling up its response to reach 200,000 people in the Diffa region. But without urgent funding, critical nutrition support for pregnant and breastfeeding women will be at risk.
