Qatar Charity has recently completed a number of water projects in the Republic of Mali. The projects included several wells in Mopti, an area around 650 kilometers from the capital, in addition to wells in the villages of Sirmaloy, Dan and Cumbuco providing access to safe drinking water to 450 families at a total cost of around QAR 50,000 (USD 13,700). These wells were dug to a depth ranging from between 18 and 25 meters and provide over 5 cubic meters of water per hour to several thousand people who previously suffered regularly from illness and disease due to the lack of clean drinking water; especially during regular periaods of drought and thirst.
The digging of the wells ran in tandem with an awareness raising campaign that aimed to improve health awareness and highlight the importance of water and its impact on health. The introduction of clean drinking water in the region is expected to represent an important shift in the health status of the population.
The wells were formally handed over in the presence of a large gathering of people including the governor of the region, the village heads, president of women’s societies and a large number of beneficiaries.
