SITUATION OVERVIEW
The prevailing insecurity and the socio-political crisis in northern Mali pose serious protection risks to civilians and hinder their access to basic social services. Despite the important progress made in the re-establishment of administration and public services since the start of the crisis, hundreds of thousands of women, men and children still lack access to water, health care, food, livelihood, and education. More than 220,000 people remain displaced further to the conflict (refugees and internally displaced people); while around 400,000 others chose to return to the north of the country where they need help for their social and economic reintegration.
Nationwide, food insecurity and malnutrition remain of concern. Around 10% of the total population of Mali is affected by food insecurity (severe and moderate) and 13% of children (6-59 months old) suffer from acute malnutrition (above the WHO 10% alert threshold).
