COTE D’IVOIRE
FEAR OF ATTACKS PREVENTS IDP RETURN

Persistent rumours of attacks and a weak security presence are preventing the return of some 3,000 people displaced following a series of armed raids on border villages in western Côte d’Ivoire in January this year. The return of the IDPs currently living with host communities or in temporary sites is a priority for the local authorities and aid groups.

MAURITANIA
SUSPECTED EVD CASE TESTS NEGATIVE

A Mauritanian man suspected to be infected with Ebola virus tested negative.
The patient and his travel companions had been placed in isolation at an Ebola treatment centre south of the capital Nouakchott. Mauritania is considered among the high risk countries in the region for Ebola due to migration and a deteriorating health system.

NIGER
BOKO HARAM LAUNCHES FIRST MAJOR ATTACKS

Boko Haram launched a series of attacks on Diffa and Bosso towns from 6-9 February. The attacks were the first major assaults in Niger carried out by the group. The attacks have reportedly prompted displacement, but the exact figures are not yet known. Humanitarian access in Diffa is already limited and aid operations there now risk being suspended. The assault on Niger is part of a larger upwards trends in attacks by Boko Haram both within Nigeria and into Niger and Cameroon.

NIGERIA
ELECTIONS DELAYED

The Independent National Electoral Commission has postponed the 14 February general and local elections in Nigeria to 28 March (national) and 11 April (local).
The military said it cannot guarantee security at the polls due to ongoing operations against Boko Haram insurgents.

REGIONAL / EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE (EVD)
FIRST UPSURGE OF CASES IN 2015

As of 6 February, there were 22,487 confirmed, probable and suspected EVD cases in the three high transmission countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Confirmed cases rose for the first time this year. A total of 124 confirmed cases were reported in the three countries in the week leading up to 1 February.
In the previous week, there were 99 confirmed cases (the first such low figures since June 2014).
