Education for peace was the central theme of a workshop on the development of training modules, which was held in Ségou, Mali, from November 19 to 23, 2014. Through group work and plenary sessions, the goal of this workshop was to revisit and update the various training programs and modules around education for peace and “living-together” in Mali.

With a total of 26 participants, including representatives of the Malian Ministry of National Education and officials from several government bodies such as the National Directorates of Population and Forestry as well as technical and financial partners, the 5-day workshop was part of the activities of the “Education in emergency situations to build resilience in the Sahel: supporting Mali” project.

Funded by the Japanese Government, and implemented by UNESCO in collaboration with the Ministry of National Education, this project aims to not only ensure the continuity of education but also build the resilience of the populations of Mopti, Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal. This workshop is a follow up to the first general review activity that took place in Ségou from October 16 to 20, 2014.

The importance of education for peace

"The workshop, which focuses on revising and updating modules around the education for peace, will allow us to strengthen social ties through the development of a culture of peace and respect for human rights in order to find the mechanisms to relive together, in an area that belongs to populations who must accept each other, for they are bound together by a common history”, said Mr. Bagara Coulibaly, representative of the Minister of Education.

"The double political and security crisis has largely dented the social fabric between different communities that once had a good relationship, one of brotherhood, concord and mutual respect. The school system did not escape this social fracture. We must give the best of ourselves in order to achieve the goals of the workshop, which is to provide trainers with suitable, relevant and effective tools for peace education at the national, regional and local levels”, added Mr. Pierre Saye, programme officer for education at the UNESCO office in Bamako.

In a context where displaced populations are gradually returning to their regions of origin following the conflict, this redesign of training modules for education professionals puts the emphasis on the teaching of human rights and the restoration of the bases of merit and ethics in the Malian education system.

Long-lasting gains

By reviewing and updating existing programs and modules, this workshop also aimed to provide capacity-building for all the actors in the field of education so that they can in turn train teachers on the education for the culture of peace.

For all these stakeholders, the aim is to work toward ensuring that both learners and teachers evolve in an environment that is conducive to learning, professional reintegration and the promotion of basic rights such as health, citizen participation, the culture of peace and living-together.

Thanks to the combined efforts of all participants and experts from the UNESCO office in Bamako and Dakar, 11 capacity building modules from various academic and government services on the culture of peace in emergency situations, were revisited in line with the requirements of the current context.
