Geneva, 17 December 2014

Geneva, 17 December 2014 Dear Colleagues,

A delayed start of the agriculture season and prolonged dry spells in some parts of Malawi ranging from 2 to 4 weeks in the 2013/14 growing season has caused food insecurity to a total of 640,009 people across the nation, requiring about 15,830 MT of maize equivalent to address the food shortage. Maize harvests were 50 – 75% below average during the season in some areas of the country due to the poorly distributed rainfall and the early cessation of the rains. Nineteen out of twenty eight districts namely Karonga, Mzimba and Rumphi in the Northern Region; Dedza, Dowa, Lilongwe Rural, Mchinji, Ntcheu and Salima in the Central Region and Balaka, Blantyre Rural, Chikhwawa, Mulanje, Phalombe, Machinga, Mwanza, Neno, Nsanje and Zomba in the Southern Region, will face food deficits ranging from two to four months. Many of these areas are impact areas for ACT members’ developmental and humanitarian projects.

Members of the ACT Malawi forum have taken part in assessing the current food security situation as team members of the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC), through the involvement of its partners like the Evangelical Lutheran Development Services (ELDS). The Malawi forum members continue to monitor the situation on the ground and share information collected within the forum and externally with other partners.

Following the responses from funding members to the preliminary appeal issued on 6 November 2014, it was decided by the ACT secretariat and the Malawi forum to proceed with this response only with one ACT Requesting Member, CARD, and with a limited target.

This full appeal replaces the preliminary appeal issued on 6 November 2014, now removed from our web site.
