EIGHT SUSPECTED DEATHS BY LASSA FEVER
According to health authorities, 14 suspected cases of Lassa fever including eight deaths have
been reported in Benin. A total of 170 contacts are currently being monitored in the towns of
Tanguieta and Cobly.

VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS INTENSIFY ON FOGO ISLAND
Due to intensified volcanic eruptions on Fogo Island, authorities have ordered the evacuation of
the entire Bangueira and Portela communities in addition to the Cha das Caldeiras village
evacuated last week. A health emergency plan has been activated due to large emissions of
toxic gases. OCHA has deployed a three-member UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination
(UNDAC) team to support the national authorities in rapid needs assessment, information
management and response coordination.

THOUSANDS CONTINUE TO FLEE TO NIGER AFTER ATTACK ON DAMASSAK
Following the attack of Damassack in Nigeria, on 24 November, thousands of people continue
to seek refuge at the Gagamari site (Diffa). This comes in addition to the already 105,000
Nigerian refugees and Nigerien returnees who have crossed the border into the Diffa region
since 2013. The displaced people urgently need potable water, sanitation, protection and
shelter.

100 PEOPLE KILLED BY A TWIN-BOMB ATTACK IN KANO
Over 100 people have been killed and about 150 wounded at the Kano Central Mosque, in
north-west Nigeria, when a twin-bomb was detonated on 28 November just before the start of
Friday’s J’umaat prayers.
INSURGENTS ATTACK DAMATURU
On 1 December, insurgents attacked Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state forcing thousands to
flee the town. The National Emergency Management Agency has registered 700,000 IDPs in
the north-eastern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.
BOMB BLASTS IN MAIDUGURI
Two suicide blasts took place on 1 December at the Monday Market in Maiduguri, Borno state,
killing at least five people.
REGIONAL / EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE
17,145 CASES AND 6,070 DEATHS
As of 2 December, a total of 17,145 confirmed, probable, and suspected cases of EVD and
6,070 deaths have been reported in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
NO NEW CASES IN MALI
Mali has had no new confirmed cases of EVD for ten days. The country has reported eight
cases and six people have died of EVD. 287 people are currently being monitored but have
shown no sign of the disease.
SENEGAL
RISK OF ACUTE FOOD INSECURITY IN 2015
According to a Fewsnet report issued on 3 December, in Senegal, the 2014 cereal production
is estimated to be about 45 per cent below the five-year average. Fewsnet predicts that in
March 2015, the most vulnerable households will not be able to meet their essential needs. The
regions of Louga, Matam, Thiès and areas in northern Tambacounda could experience acute
food insecurity by May 2015.
