Since 2007, Qatar Charity has implemented numerous relief, rehabilitation, recovery and development projects in Niger benefiting hundreds of thousands of people.
Qatar Charity's latest food security project has taken place in the village Qataoanicaana of Dosso Region, which is located 270 kilometers from the capital, Niamey. It aims to improve the food self-sufficiency and livelihoods of small farmers. In partnership with the local authorities and the Regional Directorate of the Niger Ministry of Agriculture, this demonstration project entails the installation of irrigation equipment, fencing land and the purchase and distribution of seeds, fertilizer, animal carts and spraying equipment to combat harmful insects. Agriculture extension and training of beneficiaries will reinforce the agricultural inputs.
In this same village, Qatar Charity earlier this year dug artesian wells with a 30 cubic meter capacity tank and solar powered pump. These wells are only water sources for several neighboring villages, which oftentimes suffer from water shortages and drought.
Meanwhile, Qatar Charity also has opened a charitable dispensary in the village of Namare, a village of Tillabery province, located 110 kilometers from the capital, Niamey. Here, Qatar Charity also has drilled artesian wells and installed solar-powered pumps and water tanks, provided animals for animal husbandry and seeds and fertilizer agricultural inputs for poor families. At the opening ceremony marking the projects, Dr. Hassan Adamu, the Prime Minister of Niger's Health Affairs Adviser commended Qatar Charity's approaches and asked that other organizations follow this model to help alleviate the suffering of so many living in isolated villages in Niger.
