BURKINA FASO

MICHEL KAFANDO CHOSEN AS INTERIM PRESIDENT
On 18 November, Michel Kafando, was sworn in as Burkina Faso’s interim President. In compliance to the Charter of the Transition signed on 16 November, Mr. Kafando, a former Foreign Minister and diplomat has been chosen to oversee a one-year transition back to civilian rule in Burkina Faso.

CAMEROON/NIGERIA

HIGH MALNUTRITION RATES AMONG NEWLY ARRIVED NIGERIAN REFUGEES
A nutrition survey conducted by UNICEF from 4 to 6 November 2014, in the Minawao refugee camp in Cameroon, revealed that 3.7% of the Nigerian refugee children arrived in the camp since mid-October suffer from severe acute malnutrition (SAM). To reverse this situation, aid organizations are distributing food rations and blanket feeding.

CONTINUING VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA FORCES PEOPLE TO FLEE
According to authorities in Cameroon, the majority of the 13,000 Nigerian refugees who crossed from Adamawa state after the attack of the town of Mubi in late October, has now returned to Nigeria. UNHCR is seeking assurances that this movement was not forced.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

11,500 CASES OF MEASLES REPORTED IN THE KATANGA PROVINCE
From January to October 2014, 11,500 cases of measles and 100 deaths were reported in the Katanga province. This is twice as high as the cases registered at the same period last year. Five health areas (Kabondo Dianda, Bukama, Mufunga Sampwe, Kilwa and Kalemie) are currently affected by the measles outbreak.

EBOLA OUTBREAK DECLARED OVER
Authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo declared on 15 November the end of the Ebola Disease Virus outbreak in the Equateur Province. The disease caused 49 deaths among the 66 people affected.

MAURITANIA

FOOD INSECURITY CRISIS IN FEBRUARY/MARCH
According to the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, poor rainfall during the June to October season in south-central Mauritania will result in significantly below-average main and off-season harvests, reduced seasonal labor incomes and reduced income from livestock sales. In February/March 2015, more than 300,000 poor households in affected areas will begin to face food consumption gaps.

NIGERIASTATE OF EMERGENCY IN NORTHEAST MIGHT BE EXTENDED
After reviewing the state of insecurity in the northeast of Nigeria, the Federal Government has requested the extension of the state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adama States. Media reported that Boko Haram has seized nearly 20 communities in Borno, yobe and Adamawa.
On 14 November, they attempted to capture Chibok, the town known for the kidnapping of 279 female students in April.

EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE

15,145 CASES / 5,420 DEATHS
WHO reports that as of 19 November, there has been a total of 15,145 EVD cases (suspected, probable and confirmed) resulting in 5,420 deaths.

FIVE REPORTED EVD DEATHS IN MALI
As of 18 November 2014, there have been 6 EVD cases (suspected, probable and confirmed) and 5 deaths in Mali. A total of 384 contacts are being monitored.
