At least 36 people have died and more than 8,000 houses have been destroyed by flooding in heavy rain that has drenched Niger since June, the UN said Thursday.

Cases of cholera have risen in some zones, it said. In September alone, 641 cases were recorded, with 38 deaths.

In all, some 68,000 people have been affected by the flood disaster, the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the poor African country said in an online statement.

Niger's three-month wet season is due to end soon. The country is often prey to severe food crises caused by droughts and floods.
