Despite a return of seasonally normal rainfall during August, moisture deficits persist in northwestern Senegal. The delayed onset of the season in July has resulted in poor growing conditions and crop development.
Poor July rains in several local areas of Mali have resulted in poor crop and pastoral conditions. August and September rains have improved ground conditions, although the rainy season is quickly coming to a close.
Poor seasonal rainfall since mid-August, including prolonged dry spells, has led to late-season moisture deficits that have inhibited crop development throughout parts of the Tillaberi region of southwestern Niger and eastern Mali. Below-average rains are forecast in these areas for the next week.

A second week of torrential rain is forecast for typically dry parts of the Greater Horn of Africa, including central and northeastern parts of Somalia. Localized flash flooding is likely in areas that receive heavy rains.
