Two national NRC-staff were killed in Mali on May 29th when an explosion struck the vehicle whilst travelling. The incident took place on the Timbuktu-road around 4 pm local time. The place of the incident is 15 kilometres west of Douékire in the Timbuktu region.

  • This is a tragic loss for the entire international NRC-family. My thoughts are with the family and friends of our two colleagues. At the same time we are doing all we can to support our colleagues in the Mali-program.

This is a reminder of the unacceptable risk facing humanitarian workers coming to the relief of civilians in contemporary conflicts, says Secretary General Jan Egeland.

The road where the incident happened is used daily and there is no indication that NRC was a direct target. NRC is conducting an internal investigation of the incident
