Country: Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria

Around 9.5 million people are affected by conflict and natural disasters, with 255 000 internally displaced in the northeast and around 70 000 refugees and returnees in Niger, Cameroon and Chad.

There is an urgent need for a better assessment of the humanitarian situation in the northeast of the country - where a state of emergency is in force and escalating violence has led to the death of at least 1 500 civilians since the beginning of 2014. Relief organisations' capacity to provide assistance and protection for victims of the armed conflict should be increased.

Northern Nigeria is affected by a severe food and nutrition crisis exacerbated by the conflict. The country has the highest number of acutely malnourished children in West Africa.

An important cholera outbreak lingers on in central Nigeria. Investing in preparedness and building response capacity with regard to floods and epidemics remains a priority.

In 2014, the European Commission is making available €7.5 million in life-saving assistance to cover the needs of the victims of violence in the Borno, Yobo and Adamawa states, providing emergency food assistance and improving the community management of acutely malnourished children.
