Whether harvests have been good or bad, poor families across the Sahel have a tough time filling their granaries and supporting themselves throughout the year. After four successive food crises in less than a decade, 2014 promises to be another difficult year for 20 million people in the region. The European Commission’s humanitarian aid department ECHO seeks to break the endless cycle of emergencies by combining life-saving intervention with actions to protect the most vulnerable families and strengthen their resilience. To break the endless cycle of emergencies, ECHO funds a range of interventions, from preventative over life-saving to resilience building. The community management of malnutrition whereby volunteers actively look for malnourished children within their own community is proving very effective in saving children’s lives. ©EC/ECHO/Anouk Delafortrie
