Snapshot 09 – 16 September
In Syria, heavy fighting continues, with air-strikes on opposition controlled areas in Damascus and on-going offensives in Aleppo, Rural Damascus, Idleb, Homs and Al-Hasakeh. Meanwhile, after three days of talks in Geneva, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reached an agreement on a disarmament proposal under which Syria’s stockpiles of chemical weapons are to be eliminated by mid-2014. The Syrian Minister for Information has indicated that Syria will abide by the terms set out in the plan.
Flash floods in Bangladesh affected over 178,000 people (approximately 40,000 households) in five districts since 10 September.
In Colombia, 443,000 people are affected by the socio-economic consequences of the recent protests which were held throughout the month of August. Along with critical humanitarian access restricted in the southwest, central Colombia and the south, severe impact was recorded in all the basic services.
Fighting in the northern Kachin State of Myanmar is worsening, despite last week’s peace talks in Chiang Mai.
Torrential rains in August and September have triggered floods which affected more than 400,000 people across nine countries in West and Central Africa. Senegal, Nigeria, Niger and Mali are among the most affected.
In Sudan, the clashes which erupted in August between the Rezeigat and Maaliya tribes in East Darfur have displaced an estimated 144,000 people, and killed 170.
