Catholic Relief Services remains committed to serving those affected by the escalating turmoil engulfing the West African nation of Mali.
“We have been helping many of those displaced since the beginning of the violence,” said Sean Gallagher, Mali country representative. “We are continuing those programs even as we assess new needs resulting from the increased fighting.”
Mali has been essentially divided since radical rebel forces seized control of the northern part of the country in March 2012. CRS has been providing assistance to people who fled this fighting, both in Mali and in neighboring countries.
In recent days, the rebel forces have moved further south and reportedly forces from France, the former colonial ruler, have engaged them.
“In addition to helping the many affected, we are making sure the CRS staff, facilities and supplies are secure,” Gallagher said. “We deplore this violence and hope that the country can return to peace as soon as possible.”
